He first performed jazz as tenor saxophonist with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra in 1966 at the legendary Village Vanguard in New York. That same year he earned first prize for saxophone in the International Competition for Modern Jazz in Vienna. In 1968 his single clarinet solo on a Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra recording lead to him winning Downbeat Magazine's International Critics New Star on Clarinet award. Downbeat lauds Daniels' "perfect synthesis between classical technique and jazz sensibility" and his "blinding virtuosity." Daniels has earned many Grammy awards and nominations throughout his career. He has performed with leading orchestras throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan.
