Written by the great Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski (Three Colors Trilogy) and shot in shimmering black and white by Oscar nominee Pawel Edelman (Roman Polanski's The Pianist), The Big Animal is a gently subversive allegory that exposes greed and pettiness while celebrating love, friendship, and tolerance. When the circus leaves town, Zygmunt and his wife Marysia unwittingly adopt a camel into their family. They quickly bond with the nameless beast, and at first the townspeople too are enthralled by the odd pet. But as the bond between the couple and their camel grows stronger, they find themselves increasingly ostracized by their neighbors. Jerzy Stuhr and Anna Dymna star. (Poland, 2000, 72 minutes.) In Polish with subtitles.
