Dessert for Dinner?

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011 by JonathanG

Yes - you read that right. Last week, I was fortunate enough to have Dessert for dinner. No, I wasn’t lazy and just ate a giant cookie from Great American Cookie Co. I actually went out, and enjoyed a plethora of fruit, dipped in chocolate fondue at Dante’s Down the Hatch.

For anyone who hasn’t been there, Dante’s is designed in the illusion of an 18th century ship. Even the outside (once you step away from the parking lot) appears like an old dock. Throughout the entire building, the feeling of sitting on a ship creates such an awe that one almost forgets that it’s in the center of Buckhead or even at a jazz club. Pictures on the wall indicate that Dante has been there for years, and a seat in the captain’s corner is only the beginning.

To order the chocolate fondue, one must make reservations 2 days in advance as they only do one a night. And even though it’s a bit pricey, you understand why once Dante visits your table.

Dante, himself, provides some excellent anecdotal evidence as to why this place is a must see in Buckhead. He explains the origins of chocolate with such enthusiasm, that you can’t help but stare at him, in awe, mouth watering as you prepare for your dessert dinner. He has a few jokes, but ultimately, you can tell he is proud of what he has been able to build - and showing no signs of retiring any time soon.

But the chocolate - it was indeed some of the best chocolate I have ever tasted. Definitely not the “crap,” as Dante put it, that you’re used to with your every day chocolate bar from the candy store.

Fundraiser with Class

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011 by JonathanG

Last weekend, I was fortunate enough to attend the Jewish Family & Career Services annual Fundraiser for their PAL program. First, let me explain that the PAL program is JF&CS’ version of the Big Brother/Big Sister program.

The fundraiser, aptly named Havinagala (Havin’ a Gala,) is mostly a silent auction, but ticket sales help go towards the overall money raised. The money that is raised at this event covers the entire annual budget of this program, so it is important to raise a lot of money.

In previous years, the event has targeted young adults and held at venue’s such as STATS and the Zoo Atlanta, but this year, the event was “jazzed up.” Literally. Held at the Defoors Centre off Howell Mill, Havinagala, turned the art center into an upscale jazz club.

Ticket sales included an open bar of liquor, beer, and wine and silent auction items included nights out to various Atlanta restaurants, trips to Biloxi, autographed albums and guitars by celebrity musicians, and even sports memorabilia signed by local team and college favorites. Even Spiral participated by offering tickets to upcoming events.

Overall, the night was a success. There were over 330 people that helped raise over $24,000 for the PAL program, and the Defoors Centre was an amazing venue. I encourage anyone reading to share their stories about events at this venue.

CPK for CTL

Monday, July 19th, 2010 by Adam

This one will be short and sweet. California Pizza Kitchen (known better to some of us as “CPK”) is doing a great promotion tonight through Wednesday that benefits Camp Twin Lakes. Camp Twin Lakes is a non-profit organization that serves children in Georgia with serious illnesses, disabilities, and other challenges. You will all be hearing quite a bit about Camp Twin Lakes in future posts since that is my full-time job. It is such a worthwhile charity. You can go to http://www.CampTwinLakes.org to learn more about who we are and what we do. Anywhile, while you are on the website, scroll down to the bottom and click on the CPK logo. A flyer will pop up that you can print out and take to any CPK in Georgia where they will donate 20% of your purchase to Camp Twin Lakes. I went to the Perimeter location tonight with the GF and it was good as always and the service was great. Here are some snapshots of what we had. With the exception of dessert, I forgot to take a picture of the food before we started eating. I am still new at this thing but I will get the hang of it. Anyway, here you go:

-BBQ Chicken Chopped Salad
-Spinach Artichoke Pizza (limited time)
-Buffalo Chicken Pizza
-Hot Brownie Fudge Sundae

Who knows, you may see me there again tomorrow night. It’s for the kids!

Till next time,

@
