Yes - you read that right. Last week, I was fortunate enough to have Dessert for dinner. No, I wasn’t lazy and just ate a giant cookie from Great American Cookie Co. I actually went out, and enjoyed a plethora of fruit, dipped in chocolate fondue at Dante’s Down the Hatch.
For anyone who hasn’t been there, Dante’s is designed in the illusion of an 18th century ship. Even the outside (once you step away from the parking lot) appears like an old dock. Throughout the entire building, the feeling of sitting on a ship creates such an awe that one almost forgets that it’s in the center of Buckhead or even at a jazz club. Pictures on the wall indicate that Dante has been there for years, and a seat in the captain’s corner is only the beginning.
To order the chocolate fondue, one must make reservations 2 days in advance as they only do one a night. And even though it’s a bit pricey, you understand why once Dante visits your table.
Dante, himself, provides some excellent anecdotal evidence as to why this place is a must see in Buckhead. He explains the origins of chocolate with such enthusiasm, that you can’t help but stare at him, in awe, mouth watering as you prepare for your dessert dinner. He has a few jokes, but ultimately, you can tell he is proud of what he has been able to build - and showing no signs of retiring any time soon.
But the chocolate - it was indeed some of the best chocolate I have ever tasted. Definitely not the “crap,” as Dante put it, that you’re used to with your every day chocolate bar from the candy store.

If you’re an adventurous sort and like to try new places to eat, have I got the stop for you. I would imagine that you wouldn’t be reading this blog, if you didn’t want to check out something new and different. Make sure next time your craving for something different, check out “Little Ethiopia.”
On the corner of Briarcliff and Clairmont, right near 85, there is an area of town where you can’t help but stumble into an Ethiopian eatery. My recommendation? Desta Ethiopian Kitchen. As you pull in, you can’t help but wonder if this little restaurant is a dive or find! The ambiance inside creates a very “homey” atmosphere as this place isn’t very large. But the service is friendly and is happy to answer any question you may have.
What makes this place different is that you eat with your hands. Sure, there are forks for salads -
but as I hear it (didn’t experience it for myself) even the soup and stews are eaten with Ethiopian bread called injera. We ordered plates of Tilapia and Lamb, cut into chunks, served with onions, peppers, spices, and veggies. The injera is like a thin pancake (seen rolled up in the image) that is more like naan bread than a pancake. It has a mildly sour taste, but really soaks up the juices of the dishes.
An best of all - there is currently a ScoutMob for the area. Even if you don’t go to Desta, there are plenty of Ethiopian places near by.
What’s your latest foreign cuisine find?

If you’re a fan of Dine’s, Drive-Ins, and Dives, then it’s possible that you’re familiar with one of Atlanta’s favorite southern cuisine location.
Or perhaps, you know if it simply because it has been around for almost 84 years. The Colonnade, located on Cheshire Bridge Road is one of Atlanta’s favorites for Southern Cooking.
As you pull into the parking lot, this little hut of a restaurant doesn’t look like it could fit more than 20 or so tables, but as you walk in and look to the left, the dining room is massive, fitting just under 200 people! There was not an empty seat in the entire house. And as you turn the right, a full service bar. I liked this bar because they offered complimentary chex mix as you wait. And since it was busy, it was nice to have the “bonus” snack to much on prior to ordering drinks.
As for food, think of you favorite Southern classic - they have it. Fried chicken, Pot Roast, Short Ribs, Pork Loin, Prime Rib, BBQ Salmon - the list could go on and on. And talk about the sides. Okra and Collard Greens. Baby Lima Beans and Cucumber Salad. It would be enough to just order sides for dinner - and someone in our party did just that. The portions are huge, and you’ll be happy to be taking home food for lunch the following day.
And yet, I wouldn’t put this in our “good places to eat” category just yet. The food came out between luke warm and cold. And when you order Fried Chicken and Short Ribs, you want to believe that they just came out of the fryer or oven. Also, the crowd. There is not much for diversity at this place. Even at 7:30 in the evening. It could have been due to the Cinco de Mayo parties all over the city, but this place definitely had an elder crowd to it.
I will say this - go for the rolls, stay for the Southern Classics. You won’t be disappointed.

As many of us may know, Virginia Highlands is well known for the various amount of bars in the area. But the selection of different places to eat make going to “the Highlands,” an evening affair. With places like Highland Tap, Harry and Sons, and Atkins Park, one can even eat and drink at one place and have an incredibly fun night.
Recently, there has been talk that Virginia Highlands is changing. Local eateries are not exclusive to the area. With Noche’s recent opening in Brookhaven, Taco Mac expanding from it’s original location into 27 chains (in 3 states), and the soon-to-be opening of Yeah Burger, the surrounding area is changing. And I’m not sure if the locals are happy about it.
Let me tell you, “The Highlands” aren’t changing. There are still plenty of local favorites and Goin’ Coastal is just one of them.
Goin’ Coastal is this quaint seafood restaurant caddy corner to the original Taco Mac. The menu is full of various seafood platters. For someone who lives fried shrimp platters, crab cakes, lobster bisque, and shrimp and grits, you really can’t go wrong. And for those that can’t eat seafood, they have an always changing “fresh catch.”
This Va-Hi seafood place fits with the neighborhood, as they describe themselves as a fully sustainable seafood joint. The food is either fished or farmed without compromising species’ survival or the health of the ecosystem. And their side items help make the main dishes incredible.
As someone who doesn’t eat seafood, I ordered the Rainbow Trout.
Served only one way (rubbed with their house special spice mix, grilled, and then baked for an added crisp, there was more than enough food for one person. TheCollard Greens and Jalapeno Corn Bread Pudding only helped complete this “Southern inspired” dinner. Although the Corn Bread Pudding should probably be labeled a Corn Bread Casserole.
Had there not been a Tornado Warning that night in Atlanta, we probably would have finished the evening roaming the streets, bar-hoping, and enjoying the southern spring evenings. Alas, we will have to come back another time and enjoy our “evening in the Highlands.”

Oh I love this time of year. Winter is gone, the Final Four is upon us, and in about 2 weeks, baseball season starts.
If you’re like me, and I hope most of you have better luck than that, you’ve already thrown away your brackets for NCAA basketball. You’re looking for something new to do, and baseball is almost here, but we still have to wait 16 more days before the Atlanta Braves have their opening day. So what’s a guy to do? Well, if you’re still following your brackets, good luck to you. If not, check out my Top 3 favorite outdoor places to visit; now that the weather is so nice.
#3 - Hudson Grille Brookhaven. Right in the heart of Brookhaven, this bar has a great outdoor seating area. With over 50 beers on tap, there is something for everyone. The outdoor patio is complete with an outdoor bar, TVs for whichever game you want to watch, and attentive staff. It makes for a great afternoon of fun, drinks, and relaxation.
#2 -Park Tavern. There is nothing this tavern won’t offer. Beers on tap, delicious food, and a seating area outside that oversees the park, how else can you imagine spending a beautiful day on the weekend? Maybe even 2. Occasionally, there may be a festival or live bands playing, but extremely worth the price of admission for an afternoon of music and beer.
# 1 - Tree House - By far, my favorite place to be when it is nice outside. A great breakfast or lunch place by day, and a bar at night. It really makes you feel like you are in a club house. Maybe not, so high as in a tree, but the decor creates an inviting and relaxing experience. AND you can bring your dog - an automatic plus. Tree House definitely incorporates everything you would want in a Saturday of hanging out with friends. Even the furry ones.

I never thought living in Midtown meant so many opportunities for Happy Hour, right around the corner. My girls and I recently stumbled on a Wednesday night special that’s sure to stick - Ladies Night at Piola off 11th Street/Peachtree. This “chain” thin crust pizza standby has locations all around the world and certainly feels like you walk into an international mecca as soon as you walk in. Plus, they’ve got weekly specials that will make any night seem like a good night to eat out (Brazilian night on Sunday or all you can eat gnocchi on Friday anyone?).
Specifically, their Wednesday Night Ladies night offers bottomless red or white wine or, my personal weakness, sangria if you purchase an entree. That’s basically drinking for free if you’ve already planned on eating out. Pick out any one of their thin crust pizzas or pastas and sip on as much as you wish (or can handle). Also, get in early to have some free appetizers by the bar before you sit down at a table.
All in all: a great option for a classy, mid-week excuse to get out of the house during these winter months. Round up your crew and hope to see you Wednesday nights at Piola!

A new addition to the Atlanta foodie scene, Iberian Pig in Decatur is one of those restaurants that truly tugs at my heart strings. With nods back to my days of studying abroad in Barcelona, the darker woods, dim lighting and plethora of pig trinkets couldn’t set the atmosphere up more perfectly for good conversation over a relaxed meal.
With some fantastic company (essential for any true Spanish tapas experience), we got multiple courses of their smaller plates meant for sharing. Order as much (or as little) as you want to get a full profile of their diverse fusion tapas offerings. Our waiter suggested a few of his favorites, each of which offered something new and different - all equally delectable. We dined on BWD (bacon wrapped dates in romesco sauce), albondigas (wild boar meatballs - a Spanish tapas standard), pork belly with apple and mouthwatering pork cheek tacos. Of course, entrees are also available but creatively, feel free to split these amongst your table (i.e. eggplant “rellenas” below worked out perfectly for our table of 3). That way, you can space out your eating and save room for more tasty bites.
Don’t forget about their homemade cocktails (Pisco Sour) and to die for sangria - a mix of multiple liquors and the standard fruit that has a tendency to soak up all the flavors of the soaking process. You’ll be saying “ole” after one round.
This is one of those restaurants I can’t help but wonder why I didn’t go earlier. Bravo to Iberian Pig for bringing the aura, flavor and wonder of Spain to our home in Atlanta!

I’ve been craving a juicy, tasty, “can’t-get-enough-of-this” burger for about two weeks. Now there are only 3 places in Atlanta that make my mouth water, just by writing this article.
There’s always the standard Vortex. Who wouldn’t want to dive right into their Double Bypass burger with a half-pound sirloin patty, two fried eggs, six slices of American cheese, and eight slices of bacon, all served between two grilled cheese sandwiches in place of the regular hamburger buns. Also, don’t forget the fried zucchini slices.
Then there is Cafe Di Sol. Now I’ve been there several times and I’ve been known to eat there multiple times in one week. And I always get the same thing: Andy’s Burger. It is big. It is juicy. It is tasty - all the way until the last bite.
But last weekend, I experienced a whole new type of burger at P’Cheen. P’cheen, located on N. Highland in Old Fourth Ward, and fuses different regions of culinary greatness. Where else will you see Curry meatballs? See the great thing about P’cheen is that their menu is always changing. The previously mentioned dish, at P’Cheen, is called “Chef’s Curry.” So it will be a different curry dish based on the protein available. I dare you to try their appetizer, aptly named “Just try us.” I can’t tell you what you will have, it’s whatever the chef decides to make that day.
But one thing that hasn’t changed is their burger. Start with a base of angus-portabello burger, greens, tomato, and onion, you get to choose your type of cheese and aioli. So their are multiple combinations you can create. Last time, I ordered the harissa aioli, a North African chili sauce, but the intense flavor changed the entire burger. It was a great change to an American classic of burger and fries.
Those are just a few of my favorites. But I’m always intrigued of somewhere else to find the best burger in Atlanta. Let me know where I can find — the next best burger in Atlanta!

A cold, icy week. Confined within four walls. Limited to Sunday’s grocery shopping.
You see, I live in Brookhaven between two hills (yes, uphill both ways) and could not leave my house at all during the winter ice storm of 2011. Almost everyone reading this can relate and share in the pain felt due to the city-wide shut down. By Thursday night, cabin fever had absolutely set in, and I was ready to venture out to explore the white winter world that had enveloped my neighborhood.
My exploration took my fiancée and me to the most recent addition to Village Place at Brookhaven, Kaleidoscope. To understand my excitement, let me first explain a little bit about myself. I grew up in Atlanta, experienced the Mid-West for 4 years while in college, and returned to my beloved city. But growing up in Atlanta doesn’t mean you know all the great places to eat and go out. I remember when I first discovered Everybody’s Pizza - and, of course, my friend’s were shocked that I hadn’t discovered it earlier. So finding new (or new to me) places to eat is like a really good book that you can’t put down. As with the turn of each suspenseful page of a book, I can’t wait to see what a new restaurant will bring.
So here there we were, a new place to eat and the first time venturing out in four days. Kaleidoscope, or K-pub, is a gastropub in Brookhaven. As a self-declared food-junkie and beer enthusiast, having a gastropub within walking distance of my house was too good to be true. You see, gastropubs concentrate on the quality of food. Not that other restaurants don’t, but you get a little bit more quality of food at a gastropub than you would at your other local watering hole. K-pub, as with other gastropubs, has a more relaxed atmosphere, allowing Brookhaven dwellers a comfortable place to eat, drink, and be social.
Having only been there once, I can’t say too much about their menu - though the “made-from-scratch” broccoli cheese soup was not only flavorful, but filled you with cheesy goodness. The best part of this place was really the beer selection. While they do have the typical Miller or Bud for those seeking more timid waters, the variety of new and different beers (on tap and in the bottle) made my walk home, just a little bit more fun than the cold walk there.
Overall, Village Place at Brookhaven is definitely doing their part to provide the “urban lifestyle” in this Buckhead meet Brookhaven neighborhood.

First of all, a little informal introduction as you’ll be seeing my lovely self posting more frequently.
My name is Liz and I’m a recent addition to the Spiral Hosts with the Most community as of Fall 2010. Originally hailing from Boston, I ventured down to Atlanta for college and immediately loved everything about the growing city - the all day drinking festivals, diverse neighborhoods, young “transplant” culture and of course, beautiful weather March - October sold me on living here post-college.
All in all, I’ve been here just over 6 years with quite a number of beer festivals, restaurant visits and bar hops under my belt. As a bona-fide foodie and culture seeker, Atlanta keeps surprising me every week with new treasures to check out. My friends call me the “social queen” for this reason (and because I publish a weekly Atlanta social calendar), so I hope to share my knowledge and let’s not lie, bias, with all you Spiral fans via this blog.
Secondly, let it be known that I’m a beer snob. For my first blog post, I’d like to highlight one of my new favorite hotspots that’s certainly gotten a lot of attention lately for you fellow beer fans: Ormsby’s.
Tucked into a nook of a shopping center in the up and coming Westside, Ormsby’s takes the neighborhood tavern/pub to the next level. Not only do they have an ever-changing menu of craft beers on draft (and in bottles) and an excellent upscale but affordable pub menu (try the chicken apple sausage in pretzel roll and insanely large beer-battered onion rings, pictured below), this place showcases everyone’s favorite drinking accompaniment: games! There’s nothing like sipping a few cold brews and playing a round of shuffleboard, darts, ski ball (my former Chuck-E-Cheese favorite) and yes, bocce ball. For you traditional board game players (reminiscent of Middle School), they also have a wide selection of sit down games for dinner conversation starts around the 2 story establishment - come on, who doesn’t love Uno, Jenga or Operation?
Ormsby’s has earned it’s spot in my heart as a perfect Happy Hour, date or even later night destination. Excellent choice for groups as well with the diversity of games (and beers), plus their very own private party section. I recently watched the Falcons Playoff game there and couldn’t have been happier with the crowd (excluding the Falcons performance).
Other similar bars and restaurants that mix games with libations: Twain’s (Decatur), Thinking Man (Decatur), Cypress Street Pint & Plate (Midtown -I’ve been known to play a mean game of Connect 4 at the bar), Empire State South (Midtown - bocce ball court) and The Highlander (Midtown on Monroe).
Share your favorite spots to grab a cold one and maybe play a few games on the side. Here’s to a New Year filled with Atlanta adventures!
